Exaugural season

The 1996 Copa de Oro was the 3rd Copa de Oro, an annual football tournament between the winners of the previous season's Copa Libertadores de América, the Supercopa Sudamericana, the Copa CONMEBOL, and the Copa Masters CONMEBOL (which replaced the slot that belonged to the Supercopa Masters winner). This would be the last edition played for this tournament. The Vivaldão in Manaus became the venue for this year's Copa de Oro.[1]

The tournament was contested by Grêmio, winners of the 1995 Copa Libertadores, Flamengo, runner's-up of the 1995 Supercopa Sudamericana, Rosario Central, winners of the 1995 Copa CONMEBOL and São Paulo, winners of the Copa Masters CONMEBOL. Independiente, winners of the Supercopa Sudamericana, refused to participate. In the semifinals, Flamengo will defeat Rosario Central 2-1, while Sao Paulo dispatched Grêmio by the same score. In the final, Flamengo beat Sao Paulo by 3-1 and won the title.
